Turning Springtime in New York Into a Fairytale
The Magical Landscape of Changing Seasons
Springtime in the Hudson Valley is a magical time of year. I feel so lucky to live where I do, because there is no shortage of beautiful locations that show off in every season. A good friend of mine in Red Hook has a family orchard that has been around for generations. She always reminisced about the beauty of the blossoms. This year I was able to witness first hand the absolute jaw dropping beauty and scale of just how impressive they are.
It is a full sensory experience. The sights, smells, and colors are nothing like I have ever seen. Between plums, peaches, and apple blossoms, springtime sure showed off for us this year. So what better thing to do then turn it into a fairy tale photo session?
It was a magical evening under these pink blossoms! Do you have dreams of creating your own magical fairytale session with your kids? I am sharing my favorite tips for doing just that!
- It’s all in the styling! Ethereal, flowy, and clothing that captures movement. It is what I love and am drawn to. The clothing sets the tone. For fairytale images, I think soft colors/ neutrals and lots of flowy fabric.
- While I don’t use props often, when trying to create a vibe, a small prop can really help create the mood! For this session, I chose timeless children’s fairy tale books for them to read. I love how it looks against the orchard. Quintessential childhood!
- Movement is key! Running, twirling, or being silly. These things capture childhood spirit, and a moment in time.
- Choose locations that have nice framing – whether it is found in the trees, or orchard lines. It helps make for a stronger composition.
- Create something that speaks to you! Every vision is different, so don’t be afraid to think outside the box, and watch your vision come to life.
I love capturing seasonal elements in all of my work. Spring blossoms definitely have a fairytale, dreamy vibe for me, and so it felt like the perfect aesthetic for this Hudson Valley springtime session!
