A guide to intimate motherhood maternity documentation
Capturing your maternity experience in a personal way
Intimate motherhood maternity sessions are quickly becoming a new favorite of mine. The majority of maternity photo shoots I have done up until this point have been in outdoor locations, using dresses to highlight pregnancy. These sessions are a great way to document this time with your partner or your other children. However, more often, I am getting women who are looking to explore a more personal and intimate side of documentation with their changing bodies. My first session doing this type of photography was this past winter, and I was hooked. The feelings of femininity, empowerment, and beauty ran deep. I thought, why aren’t I doing more of these?
These sessions aren’t for everyone, and I will always say the most important thing is that you are comfortable and feel like yourself. So what do these motherhood sessions involve exactly? First, in regards to location, these can be done either indoors or outside. Indoors we are able to have a little more flexibility, and it really captures a more exposed vibe. With indoors, I use a lot of texture (blankets, crochets, knits, etc) to add visual interest to your gallery. We can do these at your home, and I will work with you prior to our session so that we can “stage” your space to work for this session.
The biggest distinction between this session and my other maternity sessions are clothing. The focal point of these is bare skin. We are really celebrating your body and all that it is capable of. Styling for these would be a bra, underwear, open robe, etc. I would be more creative with how I shoot. I will use light and shadow to really highlight your curves and body. If your partner is joining us, this is a good way to incorporate some intimate couple moments between you that really highlights your connection.
These sessions can also be done outdoors! If we were to do that, I would really encourage your body to interact with our environment. Get your bare toes in the dirt, feel your body against the grass, and really allowing yourself to feel the nature around us.
So if you think that you may be interested in documenting your pregnancy experience in a more raw and exposed way, I would love to meet you. Planning to make your vision a reality is something I am energized by, and would love to chat more!
