Bereavement newborn photography is a service I formally began offering in 2024. An organization, Abel Speaks, first approached me last year about volunteering for their organization. Abel Speaks provides services for families navigating pregnancies with a life limited diagnosis. Having a previous background in neonatal intensive care, the easy choice was yes. I know how it feels to be on the other side of the happy newborn experience and what pictures mean to those families in that difficult time.
Immediately upon hearing about the family I would be working with, I was eager to connect with them. Mom and I talked on the phone before her delivery, and she openly shared the road her family was facing. I learned about who they were as a family, her other children, and Levi’s diagnosis. While it was an incredibly painful time, there was also immense love and hope for the moments they would soon share with him, however long or short they would be. I was incredibly moved by their story, but more so, their strength. They knew photographs would help keep the memory of their son alive.
Also, for any other families facing this difficult road, know you are not alone. Their son Levi was never alone, surrounded by love from the second he was born. Levi’s family graciously allowed me to share their story, in the hopes that if their story can help another, Levi’s light continues to shine.
I recognize that there are many instances where the newborn experience isn’t the happy time you had wished for. Having the honor of photographing Levi’s last moments with this family was an incredibly powerful experience. This photography service is one I continue to plan on offering through Abel Speaks. I will not limiting this service for neonatal experiences; but will continue to take requests on an as needed basis. This can encompass any family or friend navigating an end of life journey, as well as pets. I know photographs are powerful reminders of present moments.
