I often get asked what is the best time to photograph newborns. Which session is right for me? Some expecting parents aren’t sure when is a good time to schedule their newborn photo sessions. I’m here to answer all of your questions!

First off, I will say a lot depends on the type of delivery you have had, any extensive healing you may need, and if your baby has required any NICU time. Factors beyond control will affect timing for photos, but rest assured, regardless of when they will be, they will be beautiful! These guidelines are generally speaking, assuming no unusual circumstances have occurred.

For the Fresh48 sessions, as the name implies, these are done in the first 48 hours after birth. These sessions capture those super brand new and amazing little details of your newborn, that may soon fade in the coming days and weeks following birth. If you are looking to capture those newborn detail shots- peeling or crinkled skin, umbilical stumps, and just sweet newborn goodness- then this session is for you! This will memorialize your hospital experience.

For the in home lifestyle newborn shoots, I recommend the ideal time frame of 4-10 days following birth. This will ensure that we are able to capture those sweet newborn details, all in your comfortable space. If you would like to personalize your session a little bit more, capture your nursery, and the home environment- then this is the session for you.

Once again, if there is a circumstance that doesn’t allow to capture your baby in these time frames, don’t worry! We can still capture your baby whenever it is safe and you are ready to do so.

For both sessions, mid day light is best- between 11am- 1pm is ideal. I work hard with my clients to ensure we can schedule a date and time that works for everyone, and that we get the most beautiful portraits. And it is never too soon to reach out and get a date on the calendar. If you are expecting, I’d love to work with you and your family.
