Must-Do Fall Activities for Families
Favorites from a local Hudson Valley Photographer

There’s no place quite like the Hudson Valley in the fall. As the leaves turn brilliant shades of red, orange, and gold, the region transforms into one of the most beautiful destinations in New York. From apple orchards and pumpkin patches to scenic train rides and mountain hikes, there are endless ways to make memories with your family.
As a Hudson Valley family photographer, I spend every autumn exploring some of the area’s most beautiful locations. These are the places and activities families return to year after year—and for good reason.
If you’re planning a weekend adventure or searching for the best fall family activities in the Hudson Valley, here are my favorite ways to celebrate the season.
1. Go Apple Picking at a Local Orchard
Nothing says fall quite like filling a basket with fresh apples.
The Hudson Valley is home to dozens of family-owned orchards where kids can pick their own fruit, sip fresh apple cider, and enjoy warm cider donuts. Many orchards also feature hayrides, corn mazes, farm animals, and playgrounds, making them an easy all-day outing.
Favorite fall traditions include:
- Apple picking
- Fresh cider donuts
- Homemade pies
- Farm markets
- Apple cider slushies
It’s the perfect activity for families with young children—and a wonderful opportunity for candid photos. Some of my favorites include Rose Hill Farm, Greig Farm, and Mead Orchards.
2. Visit a Pumpkin Patch
Choosing the perfect pumpkin is a fall tradition every child looks forward to.
Many Hudson Valley farms offer wagon rides to the pumpkin fields, pumpkin decorating, face painting, and seasonal festivals throughout September and October.
Whether you’re carving jack-o’-lanterns or decorating your front porch, a trip to the pumpkin patch is a must each autumn. My favorite spot is Kesicke Farm in Red Hook.
3. Take a Scenic Fall Hike
Some of New York’s best hiking trails are right here in the Hudson Valley.
Whether you prefer an easy family walk or a more challenging mountain climb, you’ll find breathtaking views almost everywhere during peak foliage season.
Some favorite family-friendly hikes include:
- Minnewaska State Park Preserve
- Mohonk Preserve
- Poets’ Walk Park
- Long Dock Park
Even short hikes reward you with incredible views of colorful forests and the Hudson River.
4. Explore Charming Hudson Valley Towns
The Hudson Valley’s small towns become even more magical during the fall.
Spend the day wandering Main Streets lined with colorful trees while browsing bookstores, bakeries, coffee shops, toy stores, and local boutiques.
Some of my favorite fall towns include:
- Cold Spring
- Rhinebeck
- Beacon
- Woodstock
- Hudson
- Warwick
Every town offers its own unique charm and makes for a wonderful family day trip.
5. Sip Hot Apple Cider and Enjoy Fall Treats
Some of the best fall memories happen around food.
After a day outdoors, warm up with:
- Fresh apple cider
- Cider donuts (Hardemann’s Orchard are my favorites!)
- Homemade pies
- Pumpkin muffins
- Maple treats
- Caramel apples
Many local cafés and farm markets create seasonal menus that make autumn in the Hudson Valley especially delicious.
6. Visit a Local Fall Festival
Throughout September and October, nearly every Hudson Valley town hosts seasonal festivals celebrating the harvest.
You’ll often find:
- Live music
- Local artisans
- Food trucks
- Pumpkin decorating
- Hayrides
- Children’s activities
- Farmers markets
These festivals are a wonderful way to support local businesses while enjoying a fun day with the family.
7. Take a Scenic Drive
Sometimes the best fall activity is simply slowing down.
The Hudson Valley is filled with winding country roads, covered bridges, rolling farmland, and mountain overlooks that are breathtaking during peak foliage season.
Pack some snacks, create your favorite fall playlist, and spend an afternoon exploring roads you’ve never driven before.
You’ll likely discover hidden farm stands, roadside bakeries, and scenic overlooks along the way.
8. Schedule Your Annual Family Photos
For many families, fall marks the tradition of updating family portraits.
The colorful leaves, soft golden light, cozy sweaters, and cooler temperatures create the perfect setting for timeless photographs.
Whether your children are toddlers or teenagers, documenting this season each year creates a beautiful visual story of your family growing together.
Some of my favorite sessions include kids collecting leaves, parents cuddling little ones, siblings laughing together, and families simply enjoying time outdoors. Those unscripted moments often become the images families treasure most.

Why Families Love Fall in the Hudson Valley
There’s something about autumn that naturally brings families together.
Maybe it’s picking apples straight from the tree, wandering through pumpkin patches, hiking beneath colorful leaves, or simply sharing warm cider on a crisp afternoon. These traditions become the moments children remember long after the season has passed.
As a Hudson Valley family photographer, I have the privilege of documenting these memories every fall. Whether we’re exploring an orchard, strolling through a charming small town, or watching the sunset over the mountains, the Hudson Valley provides the perfect backdrop for celebrating family.
If you’re planning a fall adventure, don’t forget to pause, soak in the season, and make a few memories worth holding onto for years to come.
