Family Photo Logistics During Later Sunsets of Summer
Navigating Bedtimes and Meltdowns When The Sun Sets Late
Family photos during the summer season is one of the more popular times. The weather is warm, school is out, and families are gathering. The one obstacle that can make photos tricky during summer is the later sunsets. I shoot my outdoor sessions during sunrise or sunset timing, and during summer, the days are long. Sunsets can be around 8:30 pm, which often means around a 7/ 730pm start time. I know if you have small kids, this can be a challenge!
My best advice for families who are struggling with the timing is to keep it all into perspective. Family photos are one day, and if you do things or routines you wouldn’t normally do, it is worth it for happy kids!
- Try to alter nap times. If you can nap an hour or two later than usual, than your little one has a better chance of rallying later for photos!
- Similarly, adjust meal times. Do you usually have a 5pm dinner? Try 6pm- or offer a “second dinner” closer to session time. You would be so surprised how kids rally with full bellies!
- Bribery is your friend. It may not be your usual go- to move, but if you want your kids to enjoy our time and stay present, bribery can go a long way. Reward them with an ice cream or candies when we are finished!
- Carry snacks and drinks for the photos. It is totally OK for kids to snack during our session. In fact, it usually helps! Just be mindful of “messy” snacks- like chocolate or anything else that can stain teeth or clothing.
I completely understand how timing is tough when you have littles. I see kids in the summer time every year, and we truly always have a great time! If parents keep a positive attitude and go with the flow, it surely helps. I will direct when I need to, or let you know if something isn’t working. Generally, the chaos you see is great for photos. So, stay patient and positive. It will be beautiful!
Of course, if you have specific concerns, always let me know during the planning process so that we can come up with a plan together of what can work. My goal is to make this a wonderful experience for your family- including the kiddos!
