A guide to your natural, lifestyle newborn at home photography session.

InHome Lifestyle Newborn Photography in the Hudson Valley

Hudson Valley Newborn Photographer

For anyone who may be considering an at home newborn session this upcoming year, I wanted to share some tips as well as guidance and advice to making the most of your session. The reason I love in home lifestyle photography so much, is that it shows off an element of authenticity, comfort, and connection that you can’t achieve in studio photography. However, I know many families are hesitant to allow a photographer into their home so soon after welcoming theAir baby, and I totally understand! Here is some of my best advice on navigating if the session is right for you.

  • Think about the end goal for your photographs. After all, you are investing good money into these memories. What are you looking for your photographs to convey and show? While studio focuses more on posing and props, at home is natural and more of documentary style memories. I like to describe my work as “honest with a magical spin” and I think this perfectly encompasses how I approach in my home sessions. Most of us don’t live in designer homes. It’s not about that. A good photographer will be able to artfully show your connection with your baby and capture emotive images. This can be achieved in anyone’s home… and beautifully!

  • Safety and Comfort. It must be considered! In the age of COVID, I think we all have re considered our plans and how we approach certain situations. When newborns are involved who are fragile and vulnerable, no safety measure should be overlooked. I have a comprehensive strategy of how I approach my in home sessions to prioritize health and safety. We go over this in detail after you book a session with me. I have a past experience as a neonatal ICU nurse, so you can say, I take it all very seriously! Home is the safest place for your baby, no doubt. I also offer outdoor options, if weather appropriate.

  • Telling a story with your gallery. As a lifestyle photographer, I always say I want my images to tell a story. For me, it is impossible to do that with a quick 30 minute session, that focuses on one or two angles or poses. I love creating diverse galleries… galleries that show quiet moments, chaotic ones, intimate ones, and funny ones. I spend between 60-90 minutes on average with your family at your home. I lightly guide your movements when I feel it is right, but sometimes, scenes naturally unfold in which case I am a fly on the wall. You receive all edited images I take, because each one is so very important. I really couldn’t imagine not giving you a great photo! When your baby is 5- 10- 15 years old, you will absolutely love looking back on these memories and moments. They are so very sacred, and fleeting.

I would love to chat more if you have any questions or concerns about if an in-home newborn session is right for you. I can come to your home immediately following birth to capture all of those super new details, or it can even be done when the baby is 1 or 2 months old. Depending on the age we settle on, will determine the types of images and the focal points of your photographs. There is no right or wrong way to do it! Typically a lifestyle session is done between 7-14 days old, and during mid day hours for the best use of natural light. Drop me a message below to contact me! I can’t wait to plan a beautiful and customized session for your family!

I wholeheartedly believe in the power of authentic documentation. Our stories and truths are not only a gift for ourselves, but also through the generations, becoming treasured keepsakes as proof of our place and time. My passion lies in storytelling that focuses on your present moments. Whether our adventures take us deep into the Hudson Valley, high in the Catskill Mountains, or within the comfort of your home, it is always about where you are meant to be and where you feel the most alive.
