Capturing Holiday Magic With Your Kids Through Photography
Hudson Valley Natural Child Photographer
Since we are all spending more time at home these days, I wanted to share my favorite tips for capturing holiday storytelling magic at home with your kids! It will encourage holiday traditions and pastimes to be re lived, and give you memories that you can have for your lifetime. So let’s dive in!
-
Make a list of your favorite holiday traditions, whether old or new. Is it something you did as a child? Or maybe a new tradition that you have started with your kids? I love documenting sentimental and emotional memories, so photographing something with meaning is key here. For our family, when I was a kid, my brother and I “hopped the bunny” (even though I think it’s a mouse!?) every morning, which made us so excited because we were one day closer to Christmas. So my daughter loves doing that, which sounds simple, but it’s such magic to her! I shared a few of our memories here, such as hopping the bunny, our Christmas village, chopping the christmas tree, and decorating!

Use different angles and perspectives. What makes a good photograph, great? What makes it stand out? We are bombarded by so much these days, but an image that stops me in my tracks is usually one that is unique, and gives perspective. Think of a common holiday activity, and a different way to photograph it! I love shooting from high up, for a cool and different angle for an ordinary scene.

Nothing is off limits. Bring your camera everywhere, even if it’s your iphone. You never know when you will stumble upon a candid and authentic moment of your kids’ experiencing some of that Christmas magic. We can all stage our photos to capture amazing memories, but some of the best, are no doubt, photos that happen naturally; An authentic expression of surprise and wonderment. Always be ready to shoot!
Have some beautiful holiday photos to share? I’d love to see them! Give me a follow on instagram, and tag me in your photos! Can’t wait to see what you have captured! Happy Holidays to all!
