Considerations For Your Pets When Planning Family Photos
Hudson Valley Newborn Photography
I get asked all the time if it is OK to include pets in your photo session. And the answer is always yes! Your pets are your family, and so it makes perfect sense when documenting your family that your pets are included. However, just like kids, there are considerations to keep in mind to ensure all goes smoothly! You know your pet best, so these are merely suggestions I like to have you think about before your session.
- I mainly photograph dogs, but all pets are welcome! Safety always comes first, so if your pet can safely be around others, it is all good with me
- Pets act a little like children, so bring incentives for good behavior! Treats are great to have on hand, as well as toys that may help get their attention.
- Keep realistic expectations. Most cats are shy, and many dogs can be too hyper to really pose with newborns. I will always defer to you on what you think is best, but always keep realistic expectations in mind.
- I do photograph horses! My daughter is an avid rider, and I grew up around horses. If you are a horse owner and would like photos with yours, I’d love to work with you.
It is also important to keep in mind that your pet will not be in every photo, but will be incorporated for part of the session. If we are outdoors, many families will bring their pup back to the car, tie the leash to a tree, or let the dog roam (if it is safe), so we can get a good combo of photos. Again, this is a good consideration to keep in mind for your own session.
If you have any other questions about including pets in your session, just let me know! I love animals, and it is always extra special when animals are brought along to sessions. Safety always comes first, so whether we are working with your newborn, or having at a session in a public place, we will chat about those details ahead of time to make sure your pet is comfortable.
