Why natural family photographs matter
I consider myself a lifestyle family photographer, who has a passion for authentic and natural family photographs. But, what exactly does that mean? I am not strictly posed or studio, but I am also not totally candid and documentary. So I’d like to think that has me fall somewhere in between. I recognize the desire for a beautiful posed, formal family photograph. But I also strongly believe in documenting genuine moments and connection. But how exactly do we achieve that balance?
Storytelling photography is powerful. It gives you multiple dimensions of the same story. Is your family sometimes happy, but maybe sometimes sad? Is your family serious, but maybe sometimes goofy and playful? Do you find yourself staring at your baby’s long eyelashes, or marveling at their perfect curls? Every one of these things belongs to only your story. When I photograph families, each one matters so much. Which is why my goal for each session, is to be the observer.
Of course, I go into each session with must have shots in my mind. I also will ask you this on your questionnaire that you fill out during our prep time. But I also am fully aware to be mindful of those natural moments and interactions, the unscripted ones. So what can you expect from your gallery? Of course, I always capture the posed photos. You can also expect loads of candids and detail shots. And if your kids (or maybe husband!) is having a hard time warming up, not to worry! Having our photographs taken is not the most natural thing for most of us, and I am fully aware of that. I have special tricks and methods I use to help both kids and spouses loosen up. I will guide you as needed. This is also unique to each family.
At the end of the day, my business was built on the passion to give you authentic and beautiful photographs as a way to truly remember this season of life. So yes, the poses… but more so, the glances, nuances, and laughter. All of it matters so much, and is all a part of your beautiful story!
