Newborn Photography and Best Timing
The Rule is, There Are No Rules!
You are considering newborn photography? Amazing! Newborns are a huge part of my work, and I love working with new and growing families during this exciting time. My past background as a NICU nurse for 12 years has given me a unique lens into newborn photography.
As you have probably seen in my work, I keep a heavy focus on connection during a session. When I would see families in the NICU, that was always something that stood out to me; how families connect with their babies. Being able to photograph families at home or in the hospital this way is something I just love!
I know there are many logistics you must be thinking about, especially if this is your first time hiring a newborn photographer. I also understand that each photographer has their own way of running sessions. If you are taking your baby to a studio for a posed session, they may have different rules about prep.
For my sessions, I love to keep things as natural as possible. But also, I know you just had a baby and you have a million things you are most likely adjusting to. My goal is to make newborn photography feel accessible and not stressful. I come into your home, so you don’t have to leave your house. I lightly guide the session, so you don’t have to worry about what to “do.” (Secret tip- I don’t heavily pose because I think your reality is magical enough!)
My biggest question though is about best timing- what is “right?” The answer may be more complicated than you think, but also very simple. Because I always say, it is truly up to you! But, I will give some guidelines on what to expect with different baby ages so that you can make the best decision for your family.
Here is what to expect by age:
- 0-2 weeks: Super newborn phase! Heavy on details- think umbilical stumps, peely skin, little creases, most likely more sleepy. If you are looking to photograph your baby just as they come out before things start to change, definitely plan to do photos within the first 2 weeks
- 3-4 weeks: Things are changing already! You will for sure still get those newborn details. More likely to have more awake, wide eyed spells and some eye contact. Will still be able to capture tiny fingers, toes, and size
- 4-8 weeks: Not so newborn anymore! We will most likely capture more interaction and eye contact- and maybe some smiles! Your baby will be a little bit bigger and it will be less on newborn details
- 8 weeks and beyond: Definitely will see more personality. May have more cranky spells, but definitely smiles, more head control, eye contact!
Each baby stage has it’s own wonder and beauty. Which stage is what you are most drawn to?
