Winter in the Hudson Valley
Is a Winter Session Right for You?
Winter outdoor photography sessions are truly some of my favorites to do. I don’t get to do them as often as in summer and fall, so when I do, there is a little bit of a challenge involved. There is challenge in conditions, temperatures, snow, and light! But with challenge comes great inspiration.
There is a certain adventurous spirit that families have to embody to make these work! Most likely there will be some challenge with logistics. Usually, I find this isn’t hard to work around, but going in with that expectation in the beginning is essential. There is great reward, as winter light is absolutely gorgeous, colors in the skies are more vibrant, and landscapes are peaceful and still.
Here are some of my recommendations for families who are interested in taking these on!
- Consider temperatures: This is especially true if you have small children. If temps are far below freezing, I will reach out about a reschedule, but otherwise my best advice is to layer up. Knits, textures, and muted colors are beautiful styling choices to help you here! Cold kids aren’t happy kids, so keeping kids warm is important.
- Bring Layers to Warm Up: I recommend bringing heavy coats so that we can warm up between shots! This is a great trick for those who want to stay warm but don’t want to be photographed in heavy coats.
- Proper footwear is essential: Winter can be muddy, icy, snowy, and lots in between. Making sure you are safe with the proper footwear is important. But I know it doesn’t always look the best! Long dresses can hide bulky footwear. Neutral colored shoes can also blend better than any bright colors (especially for the kids).
- Bring an adventurous spirit and attitude!: Embracing the elements is a strong story in photography! These photos, while challenging sometimes in execution, are incredibly stunning and powerful in the final product. Remember to let go of what you can’t control, embrace the elements, and watch the magic happen!
