Documenting multi generational bonds through storytelling photography
The story of a family is never just one dimensional; but rather composed of a multitude of layers from generations that have come before. Being able to share in that history is one of the many gifts that grandparents can pass along to their children and grandchildren. One of my most favorite bonds to document is this: grandparents with their grandchildren. These bonds are filled with love, emotion, history, and depth. I look back and wish I had more images of myself with my grandparents, simply just being. Enjoying each other’s company, laughing, and playing. Being naive, I just expected to have those relationships always throughout my life. Preserving the “good old days” with family is just so important, and incredibly irreplaceable.
One of the ways I love documenting this relationship is by learning about your family. What are the personalities of each person? How do you relate to one another? What hobbies do you share? That is why, with each family, I treat you as if you were my own. I get to know you on a deeper level, so we can begin to plan the most genuine way to preserve these memories for you! Being able to document authentically takes time- and I use that time to learn all I can.
My goal is not for you simply to have a posed picture, but rather a collection of images that show your bond, your connection, and is the story true to only your family. These images are meant to be treasured through the years, to be looked back on with fondness and nostalgia. And one day, shared with future generations, so that stories could be shared with them about those that have come before.
And one day, after years have passed, and loved ones may no longer be with you, these memories will be valued all the more. They become irreplaceable family heirlooms that get better with age.
