What to do if you feel uncomfortable in front of the camera

I hear this one a lot! And I can completely relate to it myself. When you think about it, it can feel strange and uncomfortable to have a “stranger” come into your personal space, and take natural, personal pictures of you and your family. How can they still look natural? How can I not feel uncomfortable or strange?

I have thought about this one, because I never want this to be a reason why families hold back from documenting special moments and memories. I have always been a person who didn’t want fear to get in the way of something. Personal confession- I have a small fear of flying. Yet, I have been to five continents, and many more countries throughout my life. And every time I come back from a trip, I always feel SO happy that I didn’t let fear ruin an experience for me. I feel like this fits into the same category of conquering an uncomfortable feeling, for something unforgettable and magical.

A good photographer will help navigate the uncertainty and hopefully reassure their clients about their experience. They can manipulate and work with the lighting, turning a seemingly ordinary scene into a magical portrait. There is a certain baseline level of trust that a client should put into the photographer they decide to invest in. After all, you are investing good money for a reason! You clearly have fallen in love with their art. In addition there are some other things that I like to remind my clients that may feel uncertain:

  • I specialize in lifestyle photography which means there is a strong element of natural, organic interactions. It may seem hard to envision, but a good photographer should give direction to illicit natural emotions and reactions to create genuine portraits

  • Take away the idea of perfection! Is any family perfect? Definitely not! Are all kids perfectly behaved? Nope! (if you know them, I’d love to hear about it!) We, as photographers, expect the human condition to come through in a session- the good and the bad. Let go of what you can’t control. So what if your kid cries and screams? I promise, even though it may feel like a crazy zoo at the time, the photos will turn out better than you could have imagined.

  • I love to provide my clients with personalized styling guidance and advice, so they look and feel their best for their session. A new outfit, jewelry, etc., can really create so much confidence, which shows through in your images.

  • And finally, everyone’s feelings are different. So I am always available on a personal basis to my clients to provide specific guidance or advice for easing any uncertainties or concerns!

Its starts with saying hello! So feel free to connect with me below, and let’s discuss all of your amazing ideas!
